Hex (1987)
Although this was Joolz’s first full album of poetry set to music, “Hex”, also plays an important part in the New Model Army story, with Justin and Robert writing and producing the music. It was recorded with John Cornfield at the very special Sawmills Studio, a unique place in Cornwall, only reachable at high tide by boat. Although the studio was later used by The Stone Roses, Supergrass and many others, at that time it was unknown, and the accommodation was in primitive cabins set deep in the surrounding woods. Joolz’s poetry is largely narrative, and her voice is that of a true and unique storyteller. So, freed from the pressures of "being New Model Army", Justin and Robert were able to explore all kinds of ideas and musical avenues to accompany these stories. Later, they both considered "Hex" to have been one of the creative highlights of their musical partnership. Joolz only found out very recently that the track ‘The Stand’ became a club hit all over Spain in the late 1980s - and each of these tracks, mostly mixed by Glyn Johns, is a gem.
